‘Repulsive and revolting’: Remains of 4-year-old Javeayah Harris found in SC reservoir

Investigators have found the partial remains of a 4-year-old South Carolina girl, Javeayah Harris, following her parents’ arrest.

Aiken County Sheriff Marty Sawyer during a Thursday press conference that authorities found the remains after Javeayah had been dissolved with corrosive chemicals. The remains were then “poured” into the Cedar Creek reservoir, in Fairfield County.

The reservoir, also known as Stumpy Pond, is located around 100 miles away from the victim’s Aiken-area home.

DNA evidence confirmed the child’s identity.

“This past week has been heart-wrenching for everyone,” Sawyer said.

As Criminal Enterprise reported, arrests warrants released earlier this week indicated that Javeayah died from physical abuse at the hands of her mother, 22-year-old Michilae Herring.

Javeayah’s father, Johmarea Harris, 23, allegedly knew about the abuse but did not seek medical attention.

Herring and Harris were arrested July 4 and charged with homicide by child abuse, with Herring facing an additional charge of filing a false police report.

“I will not refer to them as mom and dad or mother and father. They don’t deserve that title,” Sawyer said during Thursday’s press conference.

Investigators, according to warrants, stated that the defendants showed “extreme indifference to human life by not seeking medical attention for Javeayah after knowing that Javeayah suffered injury which was obtained from physical abuse.”

Sawyer previously stated that he believes Javeayah died at least a month before Herring reported her missing on June 30.

“Repulsive and revolting actions,” Sawyer added on Thursday. “In my 37-year career in law enforcements, I have never, ever heard of anything so horrific.”

Sawyer said that the rest of Javeyeah’s remains will likely not be recovered.

In addition to the current charges, the defendants are now facing obstruction of justice and desecration of human remains charges.

Harris and Herring remain behind bars without bail at the Aiken County Detention Center.

A grand jury hearing is scheduled for September 4. Check back for updates.
