‘Extreme indifference to human life’: Parents confess to abusing 4-year-old Javeayah Harris, hiding body

The parents of Javeayah Harris, a missing South Carolina girl, have admitted to her death, according to warrants released Monday.

During a Sunday hearing in Aiken County, Magistrate Judge Ronald Thornton denied bond for the 4-year-old’s parents, identified as Michilae Herring, 22, and  Johmarea Harris, 23.

Arrest warrants released Monday indicated that Javeayah died from physical abuse at the hands of Herring. Harris allegedly knew about the abuse but did not seek medical attention.

Investigators, according to the warrants, stated that the defendants showed “extreme indifference to human life by not seeking medical attention for Javeayah after knowing that Javeayah suffered injury which was obtained from physical abuse.”

As Criminal Enterprise previously reported, investigators believe Javeayah had been dead for at least a month before Herring reported her missing from the Aiken area on June 30.

Herring and Harris were arrested July 4 and charged with homicide by child abuse, with Herring facing an additional charge of filing a false police report.

Herring, who called 911 on June 30, initially stated that Javeayah vanished at some point after 8 p.m., while playing in the family’s chicken coop.

Herring claimed that the family recently moved to Aiken County, calling it “not a good area,” according to a 911 call transcript obtained by News Channel 6.

Harris previously stated that he saw people snooping around the home, but the claims have not been substantiated.

Following the arrests, Herring admitted to disposing of Javeayah’s body in a different location.

Javeayah’s body has not yet been recovered.

WIS 10 reports that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) are currently searching waters near Debutary Creek, in the Great Falls area.

The defendants remain behind bars without bail. Additional charges are possible.

A grand jury hearing is scheduled for September 4. Check back for updates.
