Police in Virginia responded to an Alexandria apartment early Monday morning and ultimately shot a suspect dead after he came out of a room where he was barricaded, “running full speed” at the two officers.

Police Chief Tarrick McGuire said the officers had been called to the Canterbury Square apartment on a report of a woman shot. They encountered at least one relative at the door when they arrived and evacuated that person. The man believed to be the suspect in the shooting retreated to a closed bedroom and initially refused officers demands that he come out.

When he did come out, McGuire said, he ran at the officers, who both fired at him. The chief said it wasn’t clear if the suspect was armed when he ran at the officers.

When they accessed the room where the suspect had been barricaded, they found a woman who “had been shot multiple times.” Life-saving measures on both the victim and the suspect were unsuccessful.

The two officers involved, both with between 7 1/2 to 8 years experience on the police force, have been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

Police have not named the victim and the suspect, but McGuire said investigators believe it was a “family-related” incident.
