San Carlos tribal police in Arizona say a teenager has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting at a high school graduation party earlier this month.

The incident occurred around 11:00 p.m. on June 14 at Belvado Park in the Gilson Walsh District. San Carlos Unified School District officials identified the victim as Dezirae Nichole Harney, a 16-year-old student at San Carlos High School.

Following the shooting, first responders rushed Harney to an area hospital; she succumbed to her injuries days later.

Police have not identified the suspect and haven’t revealed the motive behind the shooting.

“Our officers and investigators are working around the clock to identify and apprehend any additional individuals involved in this senseless act of violence,” San Carlos Apache Police Chief Elliot Sneezy stated.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. We are committed to ensuring that all those responsible are held accountable.”

Meanwhile, in honor of the victim, the San Carlos Apache Council passed “Dezirae’s Law,” which regulates large gatherings and more stringent security protocols for school gatherings, according to KTAR News.

“In addition, the Council has also commissioned a study of crimes that may justify banishment
from the Tribe’s Reservation and/or disenrollment,” officials said.
