A veteran who prompted a manhunt after shooting his wife was found dead Wednesday in the woods of northwestern Tennessee.
Craig Berry, a xx year-old special forces veteran, appears to have killed himself, the Stewart County Sheriff’s Office said.
“We can confirm Craig Mark Berry is deceased and no longer a threat to the public,” the U.S. Marshals Service said in a statement, NBC News reported.
Berry’s wife attempted to flee in her car and was shot in the neck, according to Sheriff Frankie Gray, who had no idea of any motive, although he said he’d heard of some sort of “financial situation.” She was taken to the hospital with “life-threatening” wounds but was later released.
Berry was accused of attempted second degree murder, aggravated assault, and domestic assault after deputies got a shooting call at about 1:30 a.m. on May 1 in Dover. Berry followed his wife in his truck before crashing and totally the vehicle. He was spotted on a trail camera wearing camouflage as he fled in to the woods, the sheriff’s office said.
As they launched the manhunt, they said Berry was trained in survival tactics and was armed with at least one handgun and some sort of automatic weapon and was “believed to have taken extra ammunition.
The sheriff’s office said the county’s SWAT team and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents found the shooter’s body.
