An Illinois man has been charged with first degree murder in the torture death of his ex-girlfriend, a beloved mother and nurse, last month in a home in Schaumburg.
Prosecutors said during a detention hearing on Friday that Kevin Motykie, 56, recorded his attack on 43-year-old Katherine Torbick for more than seven hours on April 30, WBBM reports. The recording revealed the pair arguing, Motykie handcuffing and repeatedly raping Torbick, all while she screamed and begged him to stop.
Schaumburg police said Motykie had a pending arrest warrant for aggravated domestic battery, apparently from an incident in March that left Torbick hospitalized. At that time, she gave police a videotaped statement saying she feared Motykie would do what he ultimately did — kill her. Police said they hadn’t located Motykie to arrest him.
Police also said Motykie had three separate orders of protection from three different people.
Police said they responded to Torbick’s home just before 9:30 p.m. on April 30 when someone called 911 and reported being unable to reach her throughout the day. Officers forced their way inside and found Torbick dead. They found Motykie in the garage and arrest him. He had the recording device, with the recording of his hours-long torture and murder of his victim, in his pocket.
Prosecutors said Torbick and Motykie had dated for about 10 years but broke up earier this year. She began dating someone else in early April.
In the recording, Motykie accuses Torbick of cheating on him, although they’d been broken up for months, and beats, binds, and strangles her along with the rapes. The recording began about 2 a.m. and ended at about 9:30 a.m.
Torbick was a registered nurse, currently working at a medical spa in Algonguin, where colleagues said they were “heartbroken” by her death, WGN reports.
“In the short time she was with us, she became a part of our Sisterhood,” Julie Bevel shared on behalf of the team. “She brought warmth, energy, and genuine care to our workplace. She loved being part of this team, and we loved having her here.”
Torbick was also the mother of a 12-year-old son.
Motykie was ordered held without bond during Friday’s hearing and is in court again on May 23 In addition to murder, he is charged with aggravated sexual assault.
