Susan Smith, a South Carolina woman convicted for the 1994 deaths of her two young son, is up for parole.
According to Greenville News, the hearing has been scheduled for November 19, marking the 54-year-old’s second attempt at parole. During a 2024 hearing, the board denied her, citing the seriousness of the crimes.
In October 1994, Smith strapped her sons, Michael and Alexander Smith, ages 3 and 1, inside the back seat of her 1990 Mazda Protégé sedan as she drove toward John D. Long Lake in Union County.
As she approached the boat ramp, Smith got out of the vehicle and allowed it to roll into the water, with the children strapped inside their car seats.
For nearly two weeks after the incident, Smith pleaded with the public to help find the children, while claiming a Black male carjacked her at a stop light and forced her out of the vehicle.
On November 3, 1994, she confessed to the killings.
Although her defense team argued that Smith had mental health issues, the prosecution stated that she had been in a relationship with a man who did not want the commitment of children.
A judge subsequently sentenced her to life in prison with the possibility of parole after serving 30 years, NBC News reports.
Smith is currently behind bars at the Leath Correctional Institution in Greenwood.
