An Alabama man is behind bars after police say he left his 1-year-old inside a hot car while “drinking throughout the day.”

Tuscaloosa police arrested 30-year-old Logan Keith Chewning Wednesday. He’s been charged with manslaughter.

Tuscaloosa authorities stated that the boy’s grandmother discovered the child inside the car and contacted police, who arrived at a Brookwood residence at around 5 p.m. Wednesday and took Chewning into custody.

“The father admitted to drinking at different times throughout the day and leaving the residence at one time to purchase more alcohol,” Commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Uni, Capt. Jack Kennedy said, Al.com reports.

“At some point, he left with his child and did not bring his child back inside.”

Kennedy said that the vehicle was left “in full sun,” and temperatures reached mid-90s by Wednesday afternoon.

So far, there is no evidence of intent, “but it’s not an accident because he engaged in reckless behavior,” he added.

For now, Chewning remains behind bars without bond, pending his first court appearance. There is a possibility the charges will be upgraded to felony murder.

According to national nonprofit agency, Kid’s and Safety, the incident marks the fourth hot car child death in 2026. However, the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences will provide an exact cause of death.
